When I moved to San Francisco, I spent a ton of time at the SFMOMA. I was in love with the large scale abstract expressionist paintings by Rothko, Still, and Newman. During one visit, I sat down to admire one of the Rauschenbergs and Dennis Hopper walked up to the painting. He had a beautiful woman on his arm and was getting extremely close to the massive piece of artwork. He then said to his freind “I was in the studio when this piece was being made”.
I am forever impressed by people who make things work, make their creative lives work. Dennis Hopper has been one of these people that has truly become an icon.(a “reluctant icon”). Taschen released Dennis Hopper: Photographs 1961-1967 A reluctant icon captures a decade of cultural transformation.
